Openomy is committed to your privacy. This document serves as a reference for you, our user, to understand what data we collect, and how we store, use, and maintain it. We can, and most likely will, modify this document from time to time so we advise all users to check it often for changes. However, we will notify you before any changes that reduce your privacy take effect.
What we store
- When you register, you provide us with a username, an email address, and a password. The password is immediately encrypted once it reaches our servers and then all of this data is stored.
- As an online file system, it's Openomy's goal to store whatever files you choose on our servers. What data you choose to give us is completely up to you.
- When you use the service, we additionally store some very standard information, such as when you logged in, where from, what pages you looked at, etc. Most of this is done through the use of web server log files. We use the most common web server, Apache, so if you're interested in learning more about what Apache can log, read about their logging capabilities.
- A final note: The data on your Openomy account is your data. However, we reserve the right to delete files or accounts that are used to store or distribute illegal, harmful, or otherwise evil data.
What we share
- We will only share personally identifiable information with government agencies and only when we are required, or believe we are required, to do so.
- You, however, can choose to share your username and data with friends, family, colleagues, etc by sharing a particular tag. This is entirely up to you, however.
- Similarly, if you choose to give an application access to your files, they will have access to read and write to your Openomy account, though they will not receive information about your username or email address or password.
- We have thought about, and continue to think about, adding advertising to some of our pages, so in the future we may share non-personally identifiable information about our site (how many total page views it receives, etc.) to potential advertisers.
How we store your data
- In order to provide you with the best performance, reliability, uptime, and redundancy, we have built a system which stores your files across multiple machines. This means that when you upload a file to store on Openomy, we store it multiple times. However, this also means that when you go to delete a file from Openomy, it must be deleted from multiple machines. Typically this is done almost immediately, but due to regular problems with a network connection, or other technical problems, it may take a bit longer. Usually, this will take no more than a few hours.
- In order to guarantee you don't lost all your data in a catastrophe, we also back up on a regular basis to an offsite location. This means your data may stay on our offsite backup media for a longer period.
What you can do
- If you'd like to change your password, you may do that by going to the "View Your Profile" page.
- Account terminations currently can be sent to Ian Sefferman until we provide a method of doing this automatically. When you terminate your account, all your data will be deleted. Note: read the information above about our systems to get an idea of how your data stays on our servers.
How you can contact us
If you'd like to contact us, feel free to email either Ian Sefferman or Maurice Codik. We're open to suggestions on how to improve this privacy policy for both of us, but of course, we can't guarantee suggestions will be implemented.
